This model presents a new interpretation of the self-moving carriage designed by Leonardo. In all probability, it was intended as a piece of stage machinery for performances at the Milanese court.
The motor consists of two spiral springs contained in drums positioned underneath the carriage. Each motor operates independently, actuating a series of gears acting upon one of the driving wheels. The springs are loaded by causing the carriage to backtrack, just like a pull-back toy automobile. In order to prevent the spring loading from quickly running out, an escapement system was conceived, in the form of a pair of leaf springs, bent by two pegged gears connected to the axles that communicate motion to the wheels. Another pair of leaf springs, larger and positioned at the forward part of the vehicle, and connected by control lines to two movable wooden shafts, makes it possible to steer, or adjust the trajectory: by braking on one wheel or the other, the driver can cause the machine to turn. The sole function of the forward wheel is for stabilizing.
